Legal Intern Positions, Summer 2023 – Albany, NY

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is seeking a full-time legal intern for its Albany office for the summer of 2023. The applicant must be a current law student. Our preference is for on-site work, but we are willing to consider a remote or hybrid work arrangement for the right applicant.

PLS is a nonprofit legal services organization that provides civil legal services to indigent prisoners in New York State prisons. PLS works on a variety of issues, including challenges to disciplinary proceedings, excessive use of force, access to medical and mental health care, disability rights, access to education, First Amendment issues, child support and visitation, and sentencing and parole issues.

Under the supervision of experienced civil rights attorneys, student interns will respond to prisoners’ letters, review disciplinary hearings, write advocacy letters, draft administrative appeals, and assist in state and federal litigation, among other work assignments. Students will also have the opportunity to interview incarcerated clients.

If interested, please submit a cover letter, resume, and five-page writing sample to Christina Alicea, Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York, 41 State Street, Suite M112, Albany, NY 12207, or calicea@plsny.org.
